Peaches at the Beaches

Denny Blaine Park is a small public space on the shores of Lake Washington. In the past 124 years of its existence, it has had a very storied history and role in the city.

The park was named after the real-estate development team: the couple Charles and Viretta Denny, and their business partner, Elbert Blaine.

The Denny family were among Seattle's founders and strong proponents of open spaces, insisting the parks remain free for anyone to use, regardless of where they lived. Their vision was shared by Elbert Blaine, who had also served as Parks Commissioner.

Seven decades after the park’s opening, it became a nudist beach and a haven for the LGBT women. Denny Blaine Park was affectionately nicknamed by the community as “Dykiki.”

Though this tradition has been heavily contested in recent years, Denny Blaine Park presently welcomes anyone who seeks a sunbathing spot free of fabric.
